The Dead March

Here is a tune recorded by Bill Monroe in the 1970s. It features his trademark twin fiddles that appeared on many of his recordings of that era. The tune is available on the 1994 MCA 3 disc set “The Music of Bill Monroe” although its original release may have been on the 1972 album ”Uncle Pen.” I first became aware of the tune in 1973 when it was played by fiddler Richard Greene on the now famous “Muleskinner” television program broadcast numerous times that year in the Dallas area on KERA-TV. The program is now available on DVD.

The solo transcribed here comes from Monroe’s 70s recording. The tune is played at a very moderate pace making the tune excellent for beginning to intermediate players. The tune form is a little odd with a non-repeating eight measure A part followed by a eight measure B part in which the last four measures are repeated (making twelve bars in the B part.).
