The Tune:
I originally chose to learn the Old-Time Breakdown Bound To Have A Little Fun because of the name, and once I began playing it, I realized it can indeed be a fun and lively tune to pick on the mandolin.

- Overview of the Tune: Bound To Have A Little Fun is what’s considered a “Crooked” tune – all Parts are NOT made up of the typical 8 measures. Part A has 8 measures (repeated), but Part B has 12 measures (also repeated) – note that the last 4 measures of Part B, are the same as the last 4 measures of Part A. This mandolin arrangement provides an opportunity to use triplets, syncopation, slides, hammer-ons & pull-offs.
- Chords:
Part A || : G | G | G | C | G | G | D | G : || Part B || : G | G | Em | Em | G | G | Gm | C | G | G | D | G : ||
- Pick Strokes & Fingering: Pick all 1/4 notes with Downstrokes. Pick all paired 1/8 notes with Down/Upstrokes. The triplets, in measures 3, 5, 9 & 18, can be played with separate Down-Up-Downstrokes, or as hammer-ons, placing each finger down, one-after-another, on the same Downstroke. In measure 5, create a syncopated rhythm with the E & C notes, by playing the first two 1/8 notes with a Down-Upstroke, then take a 1/8 rest-stroke before playing the fourth 1/8 note with another Upstroke, leading into the Downstroke on the 3rd beat 1/4 note. In measures 7, 13 & 20, slide from the 5th fret to the 7th fret, while playing the next open string. In measure 17, play a hammer-on using a Downstroke, followed by a pull-off using another Downstroke.
